Lights, camera, beef

A prime example of how to use social media in your favour
Local Rapper AKA

According to Urban Dictionary, beef is to have a grudge or start one with another person and boy did Cassper Nyovest and AKA get that right. About two years ago Cassper went on his twitter page and said that his song was the biggest song in the country which made AKA mad.

AKA must have hated the fact that he was the hottest act in the country then all of a sudden Cassper comes out and steals his thunder with his song Doc Shebeleza and called Cassper which in return must have given Cassper a big head about the matter because instead of handling it like an adult he went on to provoke AKA.

When it comes to education AKA does have an up on Cassper because he studied sound engineering whereas Cassper didn't finish his high school career  because he felt like he didn't want to play it safe when he can become great. Although when it comes to punch lines Cassper takes it there especially when he said in his song Phuma Kim’ “I made a fortune, AKA’s favourite rapper, I guess I made on the Forbes list” and we all know that AKA’s real name is Kiernan Forbes so that was ouch.

Now instead of solving the matter like any musical beef should be (over their songs) they turned it into a twitter war which made me feel like maybe it was a PR stunt because you can reach a wider audience with twitter whereas with their songs only a few will listen and also some people don’t pay attention to the lyrics which means some would never catch the punch lines. Even the SWAY club incident along with the Live Amp situation was all just a way to get people to focus their attention on them.

A few weeks ago a picture of Cassper and AKA standing together in front of a pool was posted on

both the rappers twitter account with few captions but from the looks of things they seem to have peace. Cassper has even said that he would like to do a song with AKA and K.O.
Another Urban Dictionary meaning for beef is: when rappers are good enough so they start a public fight, not that I’m saying AKA and Cassper aren't good rappers because they are truly gifted, but it makes me feel like their beef was a setup so that people can pay more attention on them especially Cassper because he made a hit song off the beef. One thing I’m happy about is the fact that it’s over and they now both focus on producing good music and tweeting about stuff that matters.

  1. Talk about the long dragging beef they have hey! Its so annoying i mean like why are they still on that for such a long time? I feel like it should be over already and they should just focus on their private lives and stop being on each others' necks.

  2. Gigi I agree with you whgen you say their "beef" was a whole publicity stunt, who doesn't love a good celebrity twitter war. But I also think its another thing that South African artist do, they copying this American artist. Rememeber the Drake and Chris Brown beef? Exact same thing

    1. Exactly only problem is that the Drake and Chris Brown beef was interesting and time relevant, as in they knew how to play it well. Sad story when South Africans copy the Americans and still get it wrong.

  3. But now with the beef squashed , are we going to have anything interesting to talk about besides their music ?

    1. With the beef gone maybe then the country will focus on their music and also maybe they will also be pressured to make good music.

  4. I completely agree with you Gcina when you say that their beef was a publicity stunt. One thing I can say is that I am glad that they chose to squash the beef before it got really dirty! or else it could have ended badly like the B.I.G and 2Pac beef.. SA could have potentially lost two great talented artists.

    1. I dont think it would have gotten out of hand because their beef was staged, with B.I.G and 2Pac they had real beef. Take the Live Amp story where they pulled a gun on Cassper, how sure are we that that really happened also had the beef been real then well it wouldn't have taken a photo and one comment from Casper to squash it I feel.

    1. Ya well I feel like the only reason its over was because people were begining to catch on to the fact that it was fake so yea it had to be over.

  6. news, news, news. public's interest, whats news worthy and whats not, bad things trend, we more interested in them than the truth, and what the public wants the public gets its all a scam i believe.

  7. Gcina I totally agree with you, I think the beef between AKA and Casper is childish and it was a publicity stunt.

  8. AKA is a grown man .........Cassper Nyovest is still a young lad, i understand why he acts the way he acts. been following his tweets and all and i feel he still has a long way to go in terms of him handling himself. #notmature enough to handle the media

    1. Uhm according to the law anyone above the age of 18 is considered an adult and you seem to forget that Cassper Nyovest was not in a battle with himself but that AKA was an active member, so in response to your comment they both should grow up.

    2. i am obviously not talking about age... you can always be 45 but have childish tendencies ...WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? tottaly you did not do well your research! he was in a battle with AKA'S friend... BUT THE MEDIA MADE IT AS IF IT WAS AKA! JUST FOR PUBLICITY STUNT. *SMH*

    3. Thank you for making me aware of the fact that the media made it seem like it was AKA even though it was his friend. Although many of the tweets came from AKAs personal twitter account so I guess that's why I was under the impression that he was the one Cassper Nyovest was in battle with

    7. I do not believe that the beef between them was a publicity stunt just an obstacle on their quests to become the best South African artist.

  12. Personally I think this whole beef thing was just a publicity stunt to get people talking and also to help both the rappers generate sales for their albums.
