Social media in, Journalism out

Journalist at a press conference

I’m currently studying Public Relations and Communication at the university of Johannesburg and one of the main things they teach us is that you need to make sure that you have a good relationship with journalist because you work with the media or rather are dependent on the media a lot in today’s times however we are owned by social media where everyone is a journalist.

Think of a successful campaign such as the ice bucket challenge

,had it not been for social media the campaign would have been successful at all. The thing with social media is that it lives in the now as in the news are current and it gives everyone the platform to voice their opinion whereas with conventional media you have to wait a day or hours before you hear about the news plus they are not conversational, for them it’s all about stating facts. Another prime example is the state of the nation address ( SONA 2015) where the parliament jammed the signal  so that the public couldn't see what was happening inside the parliament, that however was a failed attempt because you cannot jam twitter’s signal and the information made its way to the public anyhow.

Now I’m not saying that journalist are completely out of fashion and that they have lost their value because that isn't so , many of the older generation still prefer their newspaper I know my father does. He will tell you that he doesn't like the fact he will hear his news from some random person who never went to school and studied journalism so don’t throw your journalism degree out the window yet because you are still needed.

Since the main aim of PR is to reach out to the audience then the best way is via social media, this way you get to feed your audience exactly what you want to say whereas with a journalist you not sure if they going to say exactly what you want them to. Another major benefit of social media is that instead of you telling your audience how they should feel about you they develop their own opinion of your brand.
The different social media platforms available

There are many social media platforms out there and each have their own attributes such as Twitter, which is where almost everyone gets their news. Each platform has a different comes different audiences who are all interested in different kind of things which means that you will be able to portray your message in different way and make it understandable to different markets which means that you reach a wider audience than you would with traditional media.

In conclusion, there are many way to reach people out there and although social media has taken over, traditional media still plays a role in the deliverance of news. We as Public Relations officers may not be as dependent on traditional media as we were back in the past but they still do play a role because some people still depend on an expects opinion.

  1. Uhm you forgeting that Twitter's signal can be jammed lol. What will happen if something really interesting is happening out there, and Twitter's servers are down? I mean most people are more on twitter really then they are on facebook. But I agree that traditional media is still very relevent. The older generation would rather watch the news and read newspapers then join any social network.

    2. Yes I think I kinda am. Not everyone is on social media. And there are those who rely on traditional media

  2. But what about those who can not access social media and only depend on newspapers, and how sure are you that in 10 years to come we going to be still depended on social media?

    1. Aren't you glad you were born in the technological age where social media has made is easy to get your news, no more paper cuts and mountains of paper lying and taking up space in your house.

  5. I agree but with people having such access to social media, do we really need journalist? I mean we can be our own sources of information without the journalists help

    1. But you forget that we still need journalists because they provide academic and background information that ordinary people dont care to give out.

  6. True, we are more reliant on technology now because everyday people are there ones that generate the news. We now depend on getting our news from people we know rather than traditional media. Journalist are still needed though because they deliver news that are far beyond the reach of those around us but we cant predict what will happen with the profession in years to come.

    1. Both your statements are correct although I do think that even though social media is taking over we will still have a need for journalists.

    1. I appreciate your comment Nhlakanipho but in my blog I present how social media is relevent and also how journalism is relevent. I presented both cases. As for where I stand, I say journalist are still very relevent because we still need knowledgeable information and also we as PRPs still need journalists to present new angles to the public and even though social media is now seemingly taking over we as PRPs cannot solely rely on one medium.

  8. Gee I think the ice bucket challenge was waste of water I mean imgine SA has a lot of places with no water why did we not donate the water to them instead.

    1. Well Noluthando that is your opinion but to be fare the reason iced water was used was for the simple fact that when you pour ice water down yourself you muscles stop working for a second which is exactly how people with ALS feel. So just imagine how many people or how much awareness they would have created if they only wanted donations. As for donating the water well that is a governmental issue.

  9. I believe that Journalist are still needed in current society maybe not for our generation but for the older generation because some of them do need print media because they do not have access to social media.

    1. Even for our Generation because how can we be sure that the news we receive is the right news, do we not deserve to be fed with intelligent information where the person actually went out of their way to get the information and actually presents new angles.

    2. Exactly because to me journalist's from "respected" publications are very factual because they represent the publication itself so i do believe that they are more credible sources of information.

  10. The question of relevance in both instances is undisputed. We have two generations i.e the traditional generation and the digital generation. I am interested in individuals or organisations evolving from the traditional age to the digital age. Whats the rate at which this is happening?

    1. There are not exact figure on that one but organisations are moving at a slower rate then individuals because we all know that organisations are more afraid of change than individuals are.

  11. Although social media took over, journalism is still in the picture. For example look at the 2015 SONA when they jammed the signal. Journalists came in handy

    1. How did journalists come handy because they were not allowed inside parliment.

    2. They used other means to publish images and stories as to what went down.

  12. looking at the advantages of traditional media as well radio for instance I could listen to the news while I'm doing something else, while social media requires you to be on screen, I like listening to the news while I workout so yes!traditional media is still important

    1. Exactly you can listen to twitter or the other social networks and also at the same time you only see pictures instead of seeing the action live unless they have shared the video which then takes up too much data and no one has time for that whereas with radio its free.
